Visiting wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen

I promised a Copenhagen post, and here it is! For our 3rd anniversary, I convinced James that we should leave a very cold, snowy UK and head to a very very cold and not so snowy Copenhagen for 3 nights. This didn’t turn out to be as crazy as it sounds, and armed with a Danish phrasebook, several thousand krone and a Herb Lester guide to the city, we had a fantastic time.

We arrived on a Thursday evening and rocked up to the Hotel Nebo where we had a cosy room and shared bathroom facilities (this may sound unappealing but actually was fine for just a few days stay) – and set out to find some dinner!

Although you may already have ideas come to mind when you think of Danish dining (pastries, smorrebrod, herring, etc) these are all visible – but there is also a great array of all types of cuisines – especially Asian food. The first night we ate at a Thai restaurant opposite our hotel and I had a great Penang curry (cannot resist those).

Friday was a day for sight-seeing, and we headed off for two of Copenhagen’s most famous sights: Nyhavn and The Little Mermaid.

Nyhavn, Copenhagen -

Nyhavn, Copenhagen –

I have a lot of photos, which I think I will let do the talking, but here are some of Friday’s highlights:

Looking around shops full of wonderful design (I could have stayed for hours in Illums Bolighus!), needing to be physically dragged away from the magazines in Magasin du Nord, pizza slices on the way back to the hotel, and dinner in the oh so trendy Fiskebar (the apple and thyme cocktails and smoked fish and chips are AMAZING).

Saturday crept up on us before long, and saw us heading to the top of the Rundetaarn to check out the views over the city (and the kissing bench)!

After this, we headed to the Torvehallerne food market to try the fantastic tasters on offer, and weren’t (overall) disappointed!

Once we had finished our pre-lunch snacks, we headed to the highly reputed Aamanns Smorrebrodsdeli for some real Danish food, taking some photos of the Botanic Gardens on the way

We rounded off Saturday evening with a look around the multicoloured cinema near the hotel and visited a burger restaurant named XO.

Sunday morning was our last chance to be tourists, and so we headed off to visit Vaernedamsvej – the Food Street – not realising that everything would be shut at that time! Not to be defeated, we continued on our way to the also very trendy cafe Dyrehaven for breakfast, and our last real taste of Scandinavia.

Around midday it was sadly time to head home, so we boarded one of Denmark’s wonderfully comfy trains (with adjustable headrests and headphone sockets!) and journeyed back to the airport – only to find out that England was suffering with a bad case of snow, and that we would have to wait hours to take off! We enjoyed a lovely last evening at Copenhagen airport…

All in all, I had a fantastic time and am sad that it was such a fleeting visit. Myself and James have already vowed to return (maybe at a warmer time of year!), and will make sure we are able to get inside both the Tivoli Gardens and the Botanic Gardens. Denmark itself seems a wonderful country with great spirit, and we also have plans to catch the train into Sweden and do a more comprehensive Scandinavia trip!

On that note, where would you recommend I check out next?
